I think one thing that really bothers me about summer is how everyone is so focused on getting “swimsuit ready” or trying to achieve the ideal “bikini body”. I know I’m totally guilty of falling into this trap myself at times, and I have to stop and take a step back from any negative thoughts that start buzzing through my head. Lately, I’ve started to think about what it is that makes me feel this way and what I really want to achieve for summer.
I mean ya I want to look good in a swimsuit (who doesn’t?), but I think what’s more important to me is feeling confident. I want to feel confident no matter what I wear, no matter what time of year. So instead of trying to get “swimsuit ready”, my personal goal is to find a balance between health and happiness that makes me feel strong, comfortable, and confident in my own skin. I have my own definition of healthy and I don’t want to be held to anyone else’s standards.
HIIT Workouts
One workout that truly makes me feel empowered is high intensity interval training (HIIT). Okay so to be honest we kind of have a love hate relationship thing going on since I dread these workouts (like the Bikini Body Guides –> ) BUT no matter what, I always finish feeling breathless, energized, and stronger than ever…..and sore for the next few days
What You’ll Need
- Set of 5-10 lb Weights
- Jump Rope
Tips for HIIT Workouts
- Listen to music that has a fast beat & keeps your energy up throughout the workout
- Have the right mindset — before you start the workout, tell yourself you are going to give it everything you’ve got (no stopping!)
- Hydrate before & especially after
- Cool down with a stretch — it will help with muscle recovery
So no matter what your personal goal is or your definition of healthy, let’s all stop focusing so much on trying to achieve a swimsuit body based on someone else’s standards and focus on what makes us feel healthy, happy, and confident — and ROCK IT! I’m learning to take my own advice too so we are in this together
